Different Stiches

Tent Stitch

The tent stitch is the most basic and widely used needlepoint stitch. It creates a small diagonal line that goes over one canvas intersection. Because it’s simple and fast, it’s usually the first stitch beginners learn. Tent stitch is great for fine details, lettering, outlines, and small design areas. It also uses less thread than other stitches, which makes it efficient and budget-friendly. However, it doesn’t provide as much support on the back of the canvas, so it’s better for smaller sections rather than large backgrounds.

Basketweave Stitch

The basketweave stitch is known as the strongest and most professional-looking stitch. On the front, it looks similar to the tent stitch, but on the back it forms a woven pattern that helps prevent the canvas from warping. This makes it perfect for large background areas and full-coverage designs. Basketweave uses more thread, but the extra durability and smooth finish make it worth it. Many experienced stitchers rely on this stitch for projects that need long-lasting quality.

Continental Stitch

The continental stitch is a slightly more supportive version of the tent stitch. It looks the same on the front, but on the back it stretches farther across the canvas, giving better coverage and strength. This stitch works well for small areas, curves, and places where basketweave is hard to use. While it’s more durable than tent stitch, it can still cause slight pulling if used over large spaces, so it’s best for detail work rather than backgrounds.

Different Stitches

Crafting and DIY trends for 2026 highlight that hands-on stitch techniques (like tent and basketweave) are part of a broader creative movement where people express identity and creativity through stitch projects.
